Hyderabad:

Innomov Islam scored a long-range goal in injury time as Uzbekistan stunned India 0-1 in the football final of the inaugural Afro-Asian Games at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium here tonight. In a keenly fought final, favourites India failed to score against Uzebkistan who played well despite having come with their U-20 squad to halt their winning streak. Uzbekistan held the ball possession for most part with good interceptions and made several forays into the Indian goal area, keeping them under pressure. But the defence and keeper Sangaram Mukherjee held their nerves till Islam surprised with the right footer from long range just as the seconds were ticking away in the one-minute injury time. The result came as a bolt from the blue to India who put up an impressive performance so far in the tournament and also dashed hopes of veteran IM Vijayan to give a fitting finale to his international career. However, Vijayan still emerged the top scorer in the tournament with the four goals in the competition. (PTI)
