London: Manchester United lost their sixth game of the season when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home by West Ham on Saturday. With captain David Beckham sitting out on the bench, it didn't do any good to his side. United's arch rival, Liverpool, continued its good run and have now charged six points clear in the Premier League title race with a win over Middlesbrough. United started the match needing only a victory to stay in contention for defending their Premiership title. But with many top players missing from the starting line-up, it was not going to be easy. French defender Laurent Blanc was out with a broken nose, captain Beckham was benched for the second consecutive game. He played only the last 27 minutes of the match. United's two other big summer signings -- Juan Sebastian Veron and Ruud van Nistelrooy -- were missing altogether as they were apparently rested. United's bid to win their eighth championship in ten seasons suffered a body blow when a 63rd minute goal from striker Jermain Defoe gave the Hammers a 1-0 lead and eventually a win with the same score. Sixty thousand Reds' fans at Old Trafford were left wondering what was going on after seeing their team slide to the ninth position in the standings, and 11 points behind Liverpool, who took on Middlesbrough at Anfield. Long range strikes by Michael Owen and Patrik Berger gave the league leaders Liverpool another impressive victory.
