Unique effort in Capital to realize World Cup dream

New Delhi:

India is currently not even ranked in the top 100 of the FIFA football rankings. But that hasn't stopped someone from dreaming that India could one day win the World Cup. The idea: Through matches in a competition between little leaguers in New Delhi, children aged under 10 will be identified and put into a football academy to be trained to perfection.Tushar Dev, of We in 2010 WC Society, explained, "In 2008, we want to produce a crack, super fit football team of 18-20 year-old boys who beats the Indian team by at least 10 goals. That'll happen if we have a soccer academy in Delhi by the year 2002. To generate enthusiasm about this concept, we have started this league among 10 public schools in the Capital.''And that's exactly why former Olympians like Sriram Singh have been involved with this project as well. Singh, who stood seventh in the 1976 Montreal Olympics 800m, said, "I too used to play football when I was in school, and this is why I thought this was a good idea. The boys we select from these competitions will be trained at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium by me and other coaches in a complete fitness programme."In a cricket crazy country, there are some boys at least who dream of playing and winning the football World Cup some day.One can only hold on to the enthusiasm these kids hold as they say, "We're trying to get there. We will finally win the World Cup for India." Watch the Story
