UEFA Cup: Parma through to semis

Turin:

Serie A strugglers Parma knew a goalless draw would be enough to take them through to the last four of the UEFA Cup, after a one all draw in their first leg in Austria Vienna. And the Italian side seemed content to sit back, visiting midfielder Sebastien Mila, who scored in the first leg, with the first shot on target on 14 minutes, easily dealt with by keeper Luca Bucci. Striker Sigurd Rushfeldt will probably feel he should have done better with this header eight minutes before halftime. Whilst five minutes later Guinea defender Ibrahima Camara has Parma's best chance of the first half. Vienna were creating the better opportunities, and could easily have taken the lead in first half injury time, Bucci pushing Czech Midfielder Libor Sionko's free-kick onto the post. Parma coach Pietro Carmignani introduced Italian international striker Alberto Gilardino in the second half, and the home side created their best chance on 54 minutes, Vienna keeper Szabolcs Safar saving at the feet of Brazilian midfielder Fabio Simplicio. Visiting midfielder Markus Kiesenebner put a free-kick high and wide five minutes later. Whilst Parma's Mark Bresciano failed to capitalise on a defensive mistake by the visitors. Time was running out for Austria Vienna to score the goal they needed, Sigurd Rushfeldt made it easy for Bucci with just over ten minutes left. There was still time for an Austria Vienna corner to cause panic in the home defence with 90 minutes on the clock, the offside flag finally stopping Rafiu Afolabi. And Bucci pulled off one final save three minutes into injury time. Nil nil the final score, Parma go through on away goals. Not the most convincing performance from Parma, but the Serie A strugglers now face CSKA Moscow in the semi-finals. (AP)
