Striker Zdravko Kuzmanovic's header in the 89th minute completed Basel's 2-0 victory over Strasbourg in the first leg of the UEFA Cup's round of 16. Kuzmanovic, who had come off the bench 12 minutes earlier, was perfectly placed in front of the Strasbourg goal to deflect Matias Delgado kick from 35 meters on the left side, bouncing it off the underside of the crossbar between the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Nicolas Puydebois. It was the first goal in European cup competition for Kuzmanovic, who is captain of the Swiss under-19 national side. Delgado, a midfielder from Argentina, opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a classic free kick, curling the ball over the Strasbourg wall and into the top left corner. Basel, who had possession of the ball for 62 percent of the time, dominated most of the match before a crowd of 14,243 in St. Jakob's Park. "We took in no goals against a strong team and scored twice," Basel coach Christian Gross said. "That's very positive." The waterlogged field made play difficult, said Gross, who added that the performance would have to improve for a tough second leg match in Strasbourg, Basel's neighbor down the Rhine. Gross said he was happy for Kuzmanovic. "He's a young man who's going to make his way," he said. (AP)
