Tiger Cup: Vietnam, Singapore draw 1-1

Ho Chi Minh:

Despite the support of a sell-out crowd at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday, hosts Vietnam could only manage a 1-1 draw with Singapore in one of the two opening matches of the Tiger Cup. They almost got a perfect start in the 25th minute, but this strike by Le Cong Vinh hit the woodwork instead of the back of the net, denying Vietnam and their head coach, Brazilian Edson Tavares, the opening goal. In the 52nd minute however, the hosts finally broke the deadlock with this brilliant diving header by Phan Van Tai Em after a cross from Thach Bao Khanh, to make it 1-0 Vietnam. Singapore looked down and out but in the 70th minute a poor clearance from this free kick by Mohammad Ishak was prodded in by striker Indra Sahdan Daud, giving the visitors the goal they needed to salvage a 1-1 draw in their opening Tiger Cup group match. In the other game, Indonesia opened their 2004 Tiger Cup campaign with an impressive 6-0 thumping of Laos. The competition moves to co-hosts Malaysia on Wednesday as Group B opens with the Philippines facing Myanmar and Timor Leste taking on Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. (AP)
