Prague:

Wesley Sneijder scored an injury-time equalizer to give Ajax a 1-1 draw at Sparta in Group B of the Champions League on Wednesday. Substitute Miroslav Matusovic scored a second-half goal to give Sparta the lead. However, Sneijder fooled two defenders and gave Sparta goalkeeper Jaromir Blazek no chance, with a well-placed shot in the first minute of injury time. Failed defense Ajax's defense failed to properly clear Karol Kisel's cross in 66th minute from the right, and Matusovic picked up the ball and his powerful drive from 25 meters found the back of the net to give Sparta the lead. Ajax dominated most of the match and came close to scoring several times. Unmarked Markus Rosenberg failed to meet Steven Pienaar's cross from the right in the 19th minute in what was his first clear-cut chance. Nine minutes later, Rosenberg collected a through ball, only to fire a low shot just wide of Blazek's goal. Close range A minute before the break, the Swedish striker had his close range shot deflected by a defender. Just seconds later, Zdenek Grygera headed from close range, forcing Blazek to produce a diving save. Seven minutes into the second half, the Sparta goalkeeper had to race from his line after finding himself on the edge of the penalty area and had to clear with a header. Sneijder got the rebound but his shot took a deflection off Sparta defender Petr Lukas and missed the empty net. In the 68th minute, Ryan Babel saw his shot only bounce off Blazek's post, and Sneijder shot over the bar in the 89th. Matusovic had a drive for Sparta in the 62nd, but it hit the post. In its next group game on September 27, Ajax hosts Arsenal while Sparta visits FC Thun. (AP)
