Captain Mickael Isabey scored a late winner as Sochaux beat Panionios 1-0 at home on Thursday to progress to the UEFA Cup knockout stage. Sochaux had lost their three previous home games and only a handful of spectators attended the match against the Athenian side Panionios. Keen contest Morocco winger Jaouad Zairi caused problems for the visitors throughout the first half, and in the 43rd minute his angled shot tested Panionios goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny, after it deflected off the knee of defender Petr Vlcek. Nine minutes into the second half, Panionios' first real chance came when Evagelos Mantzios and Sochaux defender Paisley appeared to jointly head the ball straight at goalkeeper Teddy Richert, who made a last minute save when he paddled it over the crossbar. Sochaux almost caught out Panionios with a rapid counter-attack in the 71st minute as Santos latched onto a ball over the top. His pace took him clear but he missed from 15 metres. On 79 minutes, Panionios missed a golden chance to score the opening goal when Mantzios shrugged off two defenders and the goalkeeper Richert - only for his on-target strike to be cleared off the line by defender Gregory Paisley. Skipper seals win Sochaux captain Michael Isabey sealed the win for the home team in the 87th minute. Running onto a flick from Brazilian Araujo Ilan, Isabey curled the ball brilliantly over the head of goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny. The 1-0 result means Sochaux progressed to the UEFA Cup knockout stage. Sochaux advanced from Group D, in which they finished second with nine points from four games, a point behind Newcastle, who drew 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon. Sporting qualified in third place with seven points, but Panionios, with the loss to Sochaux on Thursday, finished fourth and was eliminated. (AP)
