Singapore beat Indonesia 3-1

Jakarta:

Singapore shocked Indonesia in the opening leg of the 2005 Tiger Cup final on Saturday, beating the hosts 3-1 in front of a stunned crowd of over 90,000 in Jakarta. The final of Southeast Asia's soccer championship now heads back to Singapore for the second leg next Sunday, with the Singaporeans looking to clinch their second ever Tiger Cup title. Singapore opened the scoring when a free-kick from Norwich-born defender Daniel Bennett's shot deflected off Syamsil Bachri gave Singapore a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match. Six minutes before half-time, Singapore add a second goal when Mohammed KhairulAmri knocked in 'keeper Hendro Kartiko's rebound from a shot by Noh Alam Shah. Things got even worse for a frustrated Indonesian side early in the second-half when defender Muhammad Mauli Lessy punched Singapore's Itimi Dickson in this collision. Korean referee Kwong Jong-chul showed the red card to Lessy and Indonesia were down to ten men. Singapore then made their numerical superiority count when Itimi Dickson found Lagos-born compatriot Agu Casmir, who made it 3-0. Indonesia got a late consolation when substitute Mahyadi Panggabean blasted in a free-kick from 35-metres out to make the final score 1-3. That may have given Indonesia's head coach Peter Withe, who won two Tiger Cup titles when in charge of Thailand, just a glimmer of hope as his side heads to Singapore for the second leg. (AP)
