FC Schalke grabbed a precious one-nil win at home to Bayern Munich on Sunday to move three points clear of their rivals at the top of the Bundesliga. The AufSchalke Arena in Gelsenkirchen was a sea of blue-and-white as the home fans cheered on their team against rivals Bayern Munich. Before kick-off, both teams were equal on 50 points atop the Bundesliga. Early chances Bayern were without playmaker Roy Makaay but had knocked Werder Bremen out of contention and beaten English club Arsenal for a UEFA Champions League quarter-final berth. But it was the home side that had the early chances. Bayern meanwhile seemed to lack the energy or drive - their best chance came just before the break from a Sebastian Deisler free-kick as he was denied by Frank Rost. Brazilian midfielder Lincoln made the breakthrough in the 69th minute, sweeping a free-kick past Oliver Kahn, after Ebbe Sand was fouled on the edge of the penalty erea. Renewed chance Schalke had another chance through a free kick minutes later, but Marcelo Jose Bordon was denied by Olivier Khan who was not to make the same mistake twice. Schalke held on for a crucial win that takes Schalke three points above Bayern and into top spot with 53 points from 25 games. With nine games to play, Schalke, who do not have the distraction of a European campaign, must now be the title favourites. (AP)
