Sao Paulo, Brazil:
Santos, the 2002 champions and runners-up last year, travelled to take on Palmeiras, who were looking to climb into the top five in the Brazilian Championship on Sunday. Santos, in turn were out to increase their lead at the top of the championship. The home side made the stronger start and went close to opening the scoring when Santos goalkeeper Mauro was nearly caught off guard, direct from a corner. Early exchanges Palmeiras dominated the early exchanges and should have gone ahead when Nen had a free header from another corner. His attempt though, went wide and Palmeiras were left to rue the missed chance. Santos settled down to create some chances of their own. Elano tested Palmeiras goalkeeper Sergio with a long range effort. Powerful header The home side looked the more likely team to score for much of the first half and they went even closer when Gabriel hit the crossbar with a powerful header. But, after weathering the early storm, Santos hit back to take the lead against the run of play. After a scrappy build up, the ball found it's way to the far post where Deivid was on hand to poke the ball into the Palmeiras net. Five minutes later it was 2-0. Two goals down Fabinho was the creator with Elano on the receiving end as Palmeiras suddenly found themselves two goals down after dominating for much of the first half. Early in the second half the home side had a great opportunity to pull a goal back when Magrao made good ground down the left flank, only for Osmar to miss from directly in front of goal. The striker did make amends nine minutes from time, when he finally found the back of the net. This time it was Lucio who did all the hard work, before feeding the ball to Osmar, who scored at the far post. Red card A few minutes later, Santos were down to 10 men when Ze Elias received a red card for a second bookable offence. Palmeiras though, failed to take advantage and it finished 2-1 in favour of Santos, who top the league with 55 points from 30 games. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
