Rio de Janeiro:

National champion Santos reinforced its flagging offense with all-star striker Luizao, a member of Brazil's 2002 World Cup champions. Santos acquired Luizao on Thursday from Japan's Nagoya Grampus and signed him to a contract through 2006. The 29-year old striker starred for Spain's Deportivo La Coruna and Germany's Hertha Berlin, as well as for top Brazilian sides Palmeiras, Corinthians, Sao Paulo, Botafogo, Vasco and Gremio. In 2002, he was Ronaldo's backup on the Brazil team that won its fifth World Cup in Japan. Luizao is Brazil's all-time leading scorer in the Copa Libertadores, with 29 goals. Santos hopes Luizao will revive a front line weakened by the recent sale of all-star striker Robinho to Spain's Real Madrid and Deivid to Portugal's Sporting. Brazilian champion in 2002 and 2004, Santos is fourth in the standings, three points behind leader Internacional. (AP)
