Rosario retain lead in Argentina

Rosario:

Rosario Central remained at the top of the Argentine Clausura Championship after beating Olimpo 1-0 at home on Sunday. Alejandro Villa nearly got the home side off to the perfect start, when he hit the crossbar early in the first half. A cracking right foot strike left Cesar Gaona in the Olimpo goal with no chance, and he was happy to see the ball bounce clear. It was not long before Rosario were on the attack again, this time from a corner. First attemptFernando Fassi had the first attempt which was well parried by Gaona, but the ball found its way out to Nicolas Encina. The Rosario midfielder had a tight angle but managed to get his shot on target. He did not bank on Gaona recovering so quickly, and the goalkeeper showed great reflexes to get down low to his right and make the save. Olimpo did have chances of their own, and after Maximiliano Estevez had shown great tenacity in the midfield, he was able to deliver a pinpoint cross for Dario Delorte. Marcelo Ojeda was beaten but the header thumped against the crossbar. Looking nervous Rosario were beginning to look a little nervous, knowing that a late goal by Olimpo would end their unbeaten record. It was clearly something that Rosario head coach Angel Zof had on his mind. However, a minute into injury time Damien Ledesman popped up unmarked at the far post to score the latest of winners for the home side. The win sees Rosario Central hold onto top spot for the second consecutive week, and pick up their fifth win of the season. However that could all change in round eight, as they have to travel to Boca Juniors. (AP)
