Rooney prepares for scan

London:

England's star striker Wayne Rooney will undergo a scan at Manchester United's training center on Thursday that should decide whether he will be fit to play at the World Cup. England's first game against Paraguay is June 10, exactly six weeks after Rooney broke a metatarsal bone in his right foot playing for United against Chelsea. Although Rooney may miss the group games against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden, England hopes he will be fit enough to play in the knockout stages - provided the team qualifies. "The whole nation, everyone is willing him better and to have Wayne Rooney in our team not only as a player but as a person," England captain David Beckham said Tuesday. "We need the world to see Wayne Rooney on a stage like the World Cup." England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says he is hopeful the 20-year-old Rooney will make it to Germany. "I've always been very positive, maybe with more my heart than my head," said the Swede, who steps down after the World Cup. "I'm quite sure Rooney will be ready at some stage during the World Cup. (After the scan) we will know much better." Rooney's status took a twist on Wednesday when the Manchester United doctor who has been treating him left the club after a "difference of opinion" reportedly with United manager Alex Ferguson. (AP)
