Sao Paulo:
"Physically, I could keep playing," the 41-year-old Vasco striker told Thursday's editions of the 'O Dia' newspaper.
"But it's really time to stop. Time goes by for everyone, and it's not different for me."
Romario, who helped Brazil win the 1994 World Cup in the United States, scored his 1,000th career goal in May, according to his count.
He was expected to retire after the goal, but continued playing sparingly with Vasco in the Brazilian league. He has said he will definitely not play in 2008, but hasn't picked the exact date he'll stop.
"Vasco is strong with me and will continue (to be) strong when I'm gone," Romario said. "Other players are appearing and they can do a good job helping Vasco in upcoming competitions."
Romario contemplated retiring several times earlier in his career, but always postponed an announcement.
The charismatic player already talked about a possible career in politics and as a TV talk show host, and previously said he intends to pursue a career in beach soccer.
Earlier this week, he was the first Brazilian to be chosen to join the FIFA committee, which is in charge of analysing the sport and proposing improvements.
Brazilian Soccer Confederation president Ricardo Teixeira invited Romario to travel with him to Switzerland at the end of the month to deliver the nation's guarantee that it can meet the list of requirements to host the 2014 World Cup.
