A referee was hospitalised with serious head injuries after he was beaten during an amateur soccer match in eastern Romania. The incident happened on Sunday during a D Division match between host Viitorul Beresti and Sporting Vointa Liesti. The referee, Florin Slabu, was beaten up when he stepped in to stop an altercation between players from both teams. Slabu, 28, was head butted by one of the host team's players, Iulian Grasu, who was upset about a penalty call for the guest team. He was rushed to the Emergency Hospital in Galati, northeast of Bucharest, where he underwent surgery. The referee lost four teeth and had a head injury, Alexandru Marinescu, a doctor at the hospital told Rompres. Strict action It was the second time a referee had been beaten up in as many months in the amateur leagues. A female referee, Petronela Gore, was punched in the face by a player last month. "It's a jungle out there in the low divisions," said Ion Craciunescu, who heads Romania's Referees' Commission. He said the commission would pay for legal fees and assist in any way possible to prosecute players who assault referees. "We will not stop until we put these beasts behind bars," he said, adding that verbal violence which has been tolerated for years has now turned into physical violence. "We had people threatening to shoot referees, death threats, and nothing was done. The violence is extending and it's becoming difficult to convince people to become referees." (AP)
