Real Sociedad beat Deportivo in La Liga

San Sebastian:

Real Sociedad climbed to seventh in Spain's La Liga after beating Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 at home on Sunday. Both goals came in the second half - Darko Kovacevic opening the scoring after 50 minutes with Nihat Kahveci adding a second 18 minutes later. The kick-off was delayed 15 minutes when a mix-up over the Deportivo strip meant the visitors had to play wearing Real Sociedad's 'away' colours. Once the match finally got underway it took more than half-an-hour before the first clear opening - and when it came Real Sociedad's Darko Kovacevic blasted the ball high and wide. Incisive counter-attack Deportivo's best chance of the first half came thanks to an incisive counter-attack, but Real Sociedad goalkeeper Asier Riesgo was quickly out of his goal to block the effort from Martin Ruben Castro. So, no goals at the break but just five minutes into the second half, the home side went ahead. Eighteen minutes later, the lead was doubled. Poor Deportivo marking at a corner allowed Nihat Kahveci to steal in unattended and head past Sociedad goalkeeper Jose Francisco Molina. The visitors tried to get back into the match but the best they could do was this headed effort from Delgado Juanma, which bounced back off the post ten minutes from the end. No more goals and a 2-0 win for Real Sociedad, which saw them climb to sixth spot. A few hours later they dropped one place when Valencia pulled off an unexpected win at Real Madrid. (AP)
