Real moves up in Spanish Primera Liga

Real Madrid beat arch-rivals Barcelona 2-0 on Sunday as a goal in each half from Fernando Morientes and Luis Figo in front of a crowd of 75,000 in the Santiago Bernabeu allowed the hosts to move up to seventh place in the Spanish Primera.Morientes struck first in the 24th minute with a close-range header after fine work by Steve McManaman and Raul before Barca old boy Luis Figo struck in the 92nd minute to celebrate his 29th birthday in style after a flowing move. The Catalans have not won in Madrid since 1997 and they drop to third place behind Deportivo La Coruna and Valencia. Deportivo crushed visiting Osasuna 5-1 on Sunday to strengthen their grip on top spot in Spain's La Liga.The Galicians were 4-1 up at the interval, with a brace from Diego Tristan making him the top division's leading scorer with seven in the league.It is always billed as the biggest club match in the world and the fans in the Santiago Bernabeu certainly thought so. Real Madrid dominated early on and it wasn't long before they opened the scoring in the 24th minute against arch-rivals Barcelona. Birthday boy Luis Figo, a former Barcelona hero, gave himself a nice present after he got the final touch on a beautifully worked second goal for Madrid in the 92nd minute. This was only Real's fourth win in eleven outings in the La Liga this season. In some of the other matches, Las Palmas upset Celta Vigo 4-2, with Real Betis beaten at home by Real Zaragoza.Deportivo lead the table with 23 points, two points clear of second placed Valencia. Barcelona is third with 19 points. A further point behind are Celta de Vigo and Alaves. Defending champions Real Madrid move up to seventh place with 16 points after their 2-0 win over Barcelona.
