Madrid:

England captain David Beckham scored the only goal of the game as Real Madrid beat newly-promoted Numancia 1-0 at the Bernabeu in Madrid on Saturday. Beckham found the back of the net with a sweetly-struck free kick in the first half to ensure that Real claimed a maximum of six points from their first two Primera Liga matches. Real Madrid included all their big names for their first home game of the Spanish season with Ronaldo and captain Raul making up the strike force and new arrival Michael Owen taking his place on the bench. Real made the first move towards the opposition goal with defender Francisco Pavon's header going just wide from a David Beckham corner. Numancia, though, were not to be outdone and they stormed back to create a chance of their own. Julio Pineda received a long ball before fighting his way into the Real box and forcing a good save from Iker Casillas. Real takes the lead Real looked the more dangerous outfit and in the 17th minute scored the goal. Real midfielder Zinedine Zidane was brought down around 25 yards from the Numancia goal and Beckham sent the ball sailing over the wall and then dipping sharply into the far corner to put his side 1-0 up. Meanwhile, Real continued to push for a second goal in the second half. Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo caused the opposition plenty of problems as his shot was brilliantly saved by Numancia's goalkeeper Alvaro Nunez. Real struggled to close the game out and should have had more goals. Real manager Jose Antonio Camacho must have been happy with the three points, but he would also have been concerned with the fact that a powerful Madrid outfit failed to dominate a team like Numancia.
