Madrid:

Real Madrid kept the Spanish Primera Liga title race alive by beating Malaga 1-0 in the Bernabeu on Sunday, reducing Barcelona's lead at the top to 11 points. Real coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is under pressure following the club's UEFA Champions League exit and they face the prospect of a second season without silverware. The Merengues were unable to make much headway in the first half as Malaga soaked up the pressure. Roberto Carlos struck a free-kick from 30 metres which goalkeeper Francesc Arnau saved. Thwarted chance Malaga's best chance of the half fell to Fernando Baiano, who drilled the ball across the face of Iker Casillas' goal to the frustration of the home fans. Luxemburgo's side were whistled off at half-time, but Real showed more purpose after the break and Ronaldo was denied in a one-on-one with Arnau soon after the re-start. Malaga defender Fernando Sanz almost silenced the Bernabeu with a diving header, but his effort skimmed the side netting. Luis Figo then hit a sublime crossfield pass to Roberto Carlos. The Brazilian played a 1-2 with compatriot Ronaldo and smashed the ball home from 25 metres on 61 minutes, a goal which helped settle the home side. Closing stagesMalaga, who had never won at the Bernabeu in 25 attempts, refused to be overawed and Baiano saw a header land on the roof of the goal following a Romero cross on 64 minutes. In the closing stages, Real might have had a second goal as David Beckham set up Albert Celades for a great chance, but the substitute fired against the post from 12 metres. Real settled for a 1-0 win which just about keeps alive their hopes over overhauling Barcelona at the top of the table. (AP)
