Portugal oust England, make it to semis

Lisbon:

Portugal's coach Luiz Scolari is on course to be the first foreign coach to take his team to win both the World Cup and the European Championships. Hosts Portugal are through to the semi-finals of Euro 2004 after a dramatic win over England. Portugal won 6-5 in the sudden death after regulation time play finished at 2-2 and the first set of penalties finished at 4-4. High dramaAfter finishing 90 minutes of regulation time and two 15-minute periods of extra-time tied at 2-2, the two sides were finally divided by the heroics of Portugal's goalkeeper Ricardo. After saving England's seventh penalty from Darius Vassell, the Sporting Lisbon keeper stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball past David James to send Portugal into the semi-finals. England can feel distinctly unlucky after having a goal disallowed and losing Wayne Rooney early in the game to injury. Rooney is in fact out for a month after breaking his foot.Perfect start, buta€¦Earlier England made the perfect start to the game by opening the scoring in just the third minute after a defensive error from the hosts.Michael Owen was back in form but Wayne Rooney was back on the bench - the injury he picked up during a tackle sent him to hospital for x-rays on his right foot. The match stayed at that score till the 83rd minute when Helder Postiga a substitute for Figo scored to make it 1-1.England appeared to have sealed the match in the 90th minute. Sol Campbell thought he had scored - after Michael Owen's header came back off the bar - but his header was ruled out because John Terry was judged to have infringed Ricardo. The silver goal came into force for the first time in the tournament. The first 15 minutes were goalless, but then Rui Costa scored in the 110th minute to make it 2-1.England looked to be on their way out, but then Frank Lampard made full use off a Beckham corner. The rest as they say is history. England knocked out in the quarter-finals just like they were at the last World Cup, putting Portugal into a possible semi-final showdown with either Holland or Sweden.
