Portsmouth climbed out of the bottom four after a hard-fought, 1-0 win over champions Manchester United at Fratton Park on Saturday. Midfielder Steve Stone scored the only goal of the game in the first half as Pompey climbed above Manchester City to lie fifth from bottom of the table while a disappointing United remained third, four points behind Chelsea who drew 0-0 at home to Everton. Elsewhere in the relegation dogfight, Blackburn Rovers beat Leicester City 1-0 to leapfrog Pompey once more, struggling Manchester City were beaten 3-1 at home by Southampton while rock-bottom Wolves kept their slim hopes alive with a two-nil win over Middlesbrough.
