Italy's Parma and German side VfB Stuttgart played out a dull goalless draw in a UEFA Cup fixture played in Parma on Wednesday evening. The two teams were contesting the first leg of their round of 32 encounter. The visitors got off to a good start at the Ennio Tardini stadium, with the best chance of the first half falling to Brazilian Cacau, whose goal-bound shot was deflected behind by a Parma defender. Push for goal Stuttgart continued to push for a goal early in the second half and went close again when defender Martin Stranzl fired over the crossbar from an acute angle. Parma, though, were more determined after the interval and forced Stuttgart back into their own half. Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand had to be alert and was forced to come up with a superb save to stop a powerful close-range, right-foot shot from Andrea Pisanu. The visitors hit back to create another chance of their own, with Cacau again the recipient. On this occasion, Parma goalkeeper Luca Bucci produced a good save to keep out the Brazilian. The last good chance of the match fell to Parma, with Giuseppe Cardone drawing another excellent save from Hilderbrand after the ball had fallen nicely for him on the edge of the area. The match finished goalless and Stuttgart will fancy their chances when the return leg is played in Germany on February 24. (AP)
