Sao Paulo:

Brazilian league leaders Corinthians held on for a point in a one-all draw away to Palmeiras on Sunday, despite having to play for 70 minutes with 10 men. The opening 20 minutes saw few chances in a tight, tense beginning although Fabiano's free-kick had the Palmeiras fans on the edge of their seats after 13 minutes as it drew a fine save from Fabio Costa in the Corinthians goal. Then after 20 minutes, the visitors' young Argentine striker Carlos Tevez brought the game to life with a wonderful individual effort. In driver's seat So, Corinthians were in the driving seat. But straight from the restart, the game swung back Palmeiras's way. Fabricio was given a red card after a crude tackle on Diego Souza in the area and Juninho scored a goal from the spot for Palmeiras. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Corinthians held on relatively comfortably to go in at one-all at half-time. However, Palmeiras could have gone ahead seven minutes into the second half, but Fabio Costa managed to get a foot to the unmarked Correa's effort and divert it away. Threat posed At the other end, Corinthians still provided a threat and after great work from his striker partner Nilmar, Tevez got a chance to shoot, but Palmeiras goalkeeper Marcos dealt with it comfortably enough. Back came Palmeiras and 10 minutes from time, Marcinho Guerreiro showed his eye for goal with a long distance thunderbolt, but he was denied by a great save from Fabio Costa. The Corinthians goalkeeper was certainly proving his worth and he preserved his side's point for a 1-1 draw with another fabulous save in the dying moments from Juninho. (AP)
