Sao Paulo:
Palmeiras and Atletico drew 0-0 on the opening day of the new Brazilian championship seasonwhich kicked off yesterday. There were chances at both ends but some solid goalkeeping was the highlight of a wet evening which saw both sets of strikers draw a blank. The visitors adapted better to the conditions early on and Atletico striker Alex Mineiro brought out a smart save from Marcos after eight minutes. At the other end, an equally acrobatic save from Atletico's Eduardo thwarted Diego Souza seven minutes later. The closest anyone came to scoring came after 39 minutes as Alex Mineiro flicked a diagnoal cross-cum-shot onto the post and then saw his follow-up shot pushed away by Marcos. Palmeiras responded and Pedrinho saw his powerful free-kick turned over the bar by the agile Eduardo just a minute before the break. Three minutes later, Eduardo's save from a long-distance effort almost gave Nen the chance to grab the headlines - but it was more a case of the ball hitting the Palmeiras defender's head than the other way round and the ball bounced harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
