London:

Michael Owen scored his first goal for Newcastle in 20 months on Wednesday in a 2-0 English League Cup win over lower-league Barnsley.

Owen scored in the 57th minute to help the Magpies to the third round of the League Cup, English soccer's second-tier cup competition. Premier League sides Manchester City and Middlesbrough also advanced.

Owen last scored for Newcastle on December 17, 2005 in a 4-2 Premier League win over West Ham. Since then, his availability has been limited by injuries, most notably a torn ligament in his right knee suffered while playing for England in the World Cup.

The 27-year-old Owen will mark two years at Newcastle on Friday, but the Barnsley match was only his 14th start, and 17th appearance for the club.

He was replaced in the 82nd minute by Obafemi Martins, who made it 2-0 with a volley in the 86th.

Manchester City defeated League Championship side Bristol City 2-1, with Rolando Bianchi scoring the winning in the 81st minute from long range. Emile Mpenza opened the scoring for City in the 17th, and Bristol City equalized with a Bradley Orr goal in the 69th.

Middlesbrough defeated League One side Northampton 2-0 with Fabio Rochemback converting a free kick and Lee Dong-gook adding the second in the 66th.

Premier League clubs Sunderland, Wigan and Derby were knocked out of the competition on Tuesday by lower-league teams.

Sunderland, which is managed by former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, lost 3-0 at Luton from the third-tier League One, while Wigan was beaten 1-0 by visiting League Championship side Hull.

Derby drew 2-2 with Blackpool before losing a penalty shootout 7-6.
