Dortmund, Germany:
Germany midfielder David Odonkor is set to move to Spanish club Real Betis. Borussia Dortmund said on Monday it had reached an agreement with the Spanish team for the 22-year-old midfielder. He now has to pass a medical exam before signing. Odonkor is a huge fan favorite at Dortmund, but has languished on the bench this season after coach Bert van Marwijk replaced a midfielder with a forward in his system. "It's a huge opportunity for him - we didn't want to ruin it," Dortmund business manager Hans-Joachim Watzke said. Dortmund said a transfer fee of about US$7.28 million was lucrative, considering the club is working off the biggest debt in Bundesliga history. Odonkor is regarded as the fastest Bundesliga player and generated by far the most crosses in the league last season, although he isn't renown for accuracy. However, his precise cross in injury time to Oliver Neuville lifted Germany to a 1-0 win against Poland in the first round of the World Cup, endearing him to the German fans. Odonkor, who has 75 Bundesliga matches and two goals, was reportedly sought by the Spanish club because Joaquin moved to Valencia. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
