Newcastle United beat Paninoios 1-0

Athens:

A late Alan Shearer penalty kick secured all three points for Newcastle United as they beat Panionios 1-0 in the UEFA Cup on Thursday. Newcastle struggled to get the better of their Greek hosts, but substitute Shola Ameobi was brought down in the penalty area with three minutes to play and captain Shearer made no mistake from the spot. This year's UEFA Cup employs a new group format which came into play on Thursday night. English Premier League side Newcastle United started their Group D campaign with a visit to Greece, where they would face Panionios. The home side went close in the 23rd minute when Mario Breska's header from a Sasa Zimonjic cross was pushed wide by Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. Laurent Robert was making a rare start under Newcastle's new manager Graeme Souness and the Frenchman forced a fine diving save from 'keeper Sorin Dorel Colceag in the 28th minute, hitting the target at the second attempt. Newcastle had struggled to impose themselves on their hosts, but they started to find their rhythm after the opening half hour. A good spell of pressure was capped by a long range effort from Jermaine Jenas, but the young midfielder's strike was hit straight at Colceag. Jenas should have given the Magpies the lead in first half injury time when Colceag failed to clear a free kick from the left wing. The ball dropped to Jenas, who showed plenty of composure, but little accuracy. Panionios were almost punished for poor marking 24 minutes into the second half. Laurent Robert's corner kick found an unmarked Alan Shearer, but the Newcastle captain's header was tipped over the crossbar by Colceag. Newcastle began to overpower their tiring hosts, but it would take a rash challenge from Grigoris Makos to finally offer the visitors a clear sight of goal. Substitute Shola Ameobi was brought down in the penalty area by the Panionios player and Shearer coolly converted the penalty kick to clinch a 1-0 win. (AP)
