Newcastle beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the Premier League on Monday with goals from Steve Caldwell and Shola Ameobi. England Under 21 international Ameobi scored in the 20th minute, flicking Gary Speed's pass beyond Boro defender Gareth Southgate and into the net. Scottish defender Caldwell tapped home the second three minutes from time. Middlesbrough had Franck Queudrue sent off in the 90th minute for a second yellow card - the second time the Frenchman has been shown a red card in as many matches. Boro's Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer made several fine saves to deny Laurent Robert, Alan Shearer, Hugo Viana and Kieron Dyer. Newcastle is in eighth position with 19 points after 11 games, one position and one point ahead of Middlesbrough who have played one game more. Liverpool leads the Premier League with 20 points, Arsenal is on 26 and Manchester United on 22. (AP)
