Nantes: In the Champions League, Group D was certainly turning out to be a group of death. None of the spots for the second phase had been taken but in the end it was Lazio who came away with nothing at all. Nantes hosted Lazio and the home side waited till the 26th minute before coming close to scoring. Laspalles' free kick found Sylvain Armand's, but his header was just wide of the post. Lazio were completely dominated and had to wait till the 65th minute before getting their chance at scoring as Hernan Crespo's shot from just outside the penalty area was saved by the Nantes keeper. The French champions finally opened the scoring in the 72nd minute. Pierre-Yves Andre lobbied the Lazio keeper with a header and got French fans into a frenzy. Lazio had their last chance to equalize in the 90th minute, but Kavachevich failed to control the shot and Nantes got themselves a 1-0 win. This result means the French side is through to the round of sixteen as Group D leaders ahead of Turkish side Galatasaray, who beat PSV Eindhoven at home to confirm their place in the second phase. Dutch side PSV Eindhoven's 2-0 loss to Galatasary means that they have to be content with the Y against their name, which means they're going to the UEFA Cup next year.
