St. Etienne:

Monaco's new striker Ernesto Chevanton gave his team a 1-0 win at promoted St Etienne on the opening weekend of the French Ligue 1 season on Saturday. Uruguayan Chevanton, who replaced Spain's Fernando Morientes, stepped past two defenders to slot home from inside the box. St Etienne were back in the Ligue 1 after three seasons in the second division when they took on Monaco at their Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium on Saturday. But their much vaunted return soon became a nightmare after Uruquay's Ernesto Chevanton picked up a cross in the first minute and outmanoeuvred two defenders to score. It was a dream start for Didier Deschamps and his team and St Etienne looked stunned. However they rallied soon after and Frederic Piquionne was a constant threat down the flanks. In the second half St Etienne tried almost everything for the rest of the match to equalise. First the Monaco goal keeper Flavio Roma was forced to charge down a rushing Piquionne. Then the best chance for St Etienne came with David Hellebuyck's dash down the left wing in the 60th minute, his cross being headed away for a corner by Gael Givet. Piquionne had a speculative shot from outside the area in the 75th minute, but it fell straight into the arms of Flavio. In the end the team strategy of Didier Deschamps proved reliable until the final whistle and Monaco held on for a 1-0 win. (AP)
