Mohun Bagan Club became the first Indian team to lift the IFA shield way back in 1911. For the last two years, the club has been celebrating that victory as Mohun Bagan day, with old players donning their club jerseys. This time, the excitement seems uncontainable, with Baichung Bhutia having decided to play for the club this season. According to Subrata Bhattacharya, coach, Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, "If you look at the history of this club, we have a certain responsibility towards the country. So many of our players have represented our country and glorified us." From a bunch of 11 barefooted players who stunned the East Yorkshire regiment in 1911 to bringing home an NFL victory earlier this year, it has been a long journey for Bagan. Sailen Manna, a veteran football player, remarked, "Baichung is a very popular player. This way the club will be popularized too, as more people will come to watch. It is good for football in India." For a team that has produced legends and scripted football history time and again, one can only hope that the current crop of players will make the team proud as well.
