Mohun Bagan maintains lead

Kolkata:

Mohun Bagan continued to be at the top after finishing goalless with arch-rivals East Bengal in a super six match of the Kolkata super division football league today. The glamour outfit started off on a fast note but the pace of the match slowed down as time wore on with heavy rains turning the Salt Lake Stadium ground slushy and making it difficult for the players to control the ball. Bagan now have 31 points from 14 matches, one more than East Bengal. Bagan took the upperhand in the initial minutes and rival custodian Sangram Mukherjee had a testing time, but he came out with flying colours by effecting three brilliant saves. Fifteen minutes into the game, title holders East Bengal seized the initiative with their medios dictating terms, and S Malswamtluanga's effort almost ended in a goal, but Bagan's rookie custodian Subrata Paul warded off the danger. East Bengal got the easiest chance of the session in the 25th minute when Malsawmtluanga moved up the right and essayed a measured centre for Bijen Singh, but the latter headed out. The red and gold brigade came close to scoring on another occasion in the later stages of the session, but Brazilian Douglas De Silva's drop header narrowly missed the mark. With their medio Tomba Singh putting up a fine display, Mohun Bagan tried to regroup after the break but their attacks lacked sting and penetration. Bagan had a close shave in the dying minutes, as Malsawmtulanga foxed the green and maroon rearguards with a sudden burst of speed, entered the box, and let loose a shot which hit the second post and then got stuck in the mud, enabling the Bagan defenders to make a clearance.
