Mexico City:

Jared Borgetti pushed Mexico to the verge of the 2006 World Cup on Wednesday with a record 36th career goal for the national team as it downed Costa Rica 2-0. Borgetti slammed home a shot from the corner of the goal box at 62 minutes on a ball that had eluded a string of other players on offense and defense as it raced across the field before the goal. Fonseca scores Francisco Fonseca added another goal at 85 minutes when Costa Rican goalkeeper Jose Francisco Porras bobbled a save of a shot from midfield by Ramon Morales. The victory at Azteca Stadium kept Mexico a point ahead of the United States at the top of the CONCACAF region. The United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 earlier. The leaders, virtually assured of a trip to Germany, meet Sept. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Mexico missed several other scoring chances against the tiring Costa Ricans in the second half, but it dominated from early on, coming centimeters (inches) from a goal at 10 minutes when Borgetti took a pass from Pavel Pardo at about eight meters (25 feet) out and bounced a kick off the upright. Qualifying chances Costa Rica goalkeeper Jose Francisco Porras saved a Borgetti header at 26 minutes. Despite the loss, Costa Rica still has a shot at qualifying. Its seven points are as good as any team behind the United States and Mexico. It is tied with Guatemala, which downed Panama 2-1. Mexico had a measure of good luck when the referee apparently missed Gerardo Galindo's spectacular, leaping elbow to the head of Costa Rica's Walter Centeno at the start of the second half. Coming in, both sides had reason for a measure of revenge. During the runups to the 2002 World Cup, Costa Rica broke Mexico's long unbeaten string at massive Azteca Stadium with a 2-1 victory. Mexico returned the favor in February with a 2-1 victory on Costa Rica's tough home turf, Saprissa Stadium. Lineups: MEXICO: Oswaldo Sanchez, Carlos Salcido, Ricardo Osorio, Rafael Marquez (Gonzalo Pinea, 60), Francisco Rodriguez, Gerardo Galindo, Gerardo Torrado (Ramon Morales 46), Pavel Pardo, Antonio Naelson (Omar Bravo, 65), Jared Borgetti and Francisco Fonseca. COSTA RICA: Jose Francisco Porras, V?ctor Cordero (Jafet Soto, 70), Jervis Drummond, Michael Umana, Cristian Bolanos (Oscar Rojas, 75), Gilberto Martinez, Leonardo Gonzalez, Danny Fonseca, Walter Centeno, Ronald Gomez y Paulo Cesar Wanchope.
