Mascherano to miss action due to injury

Sao Paulo:

Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano will have to undergo surgery to fix a stress fracture in his left foot and will miss the rest of the season. Mascherano, who was acquired in July for nearly $15 million, hasn't played since August 10. "The injury wasn't healing properly, so we will have to operate to fix it," Corinthians doctor Fabio Novi told the local sports daily Lance. It wasn't immediately clear when or where the surgery would take place. Mascherano, a regular in Argentina's national team, has played only nine matches since his transfer to Corinthians, a three-time national champion and one of Brazil's most popular clubs. Corinthians is fifth in the 22-team Brazilian championship standings. (AP)
