Marseille draws match with Liverpool

Anfield:

Liverpool's European ambitions were very much on ice at a freezing Anfield in the UEFA Cup fourth round tie against Marseille. Marseille looked the better organised, and certainly the quicker side, as Liverpool struggled to find any hint of the form that saw them score four in Sofia last week and it was the visitors who had the best chance early on. Didier Drogba clashed with Sami Hyypia and Chris Kirkland to set up a rebound chance for Steve Marlet. It took 25 minutes for the hosts to create a chance. Danny Murphy and Harry Kewell set up Michael Owen 12 yards (10 metres) out but he mis-hit his shot straight at Fabien Barthez. Seconds from the break Jamie Carragher got down the left and hit a cross that Owen headed, but he could not find enough power to trouble Barthez. Liverpool went ahead in the 55th minute when Czech striker Milan Baros slid in before Abdoulaye Meite to scoop a loose ball home after Steven Gerrard bravely challenged Marseille's ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. Marseille, who like Liverpool have had a disappointing domestic season, deservedly drew level with 12 minutes remaining when Ivory Coast striker Drogba scored an opportunist goal. Substitute Camel Meriem lofted a ball over Hyypia and Drogba muscled past Stephane Henchoz to shoot powerfully past Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland from close range. Both sides then had chances to win as a tepid game finally came to life in the final quarter. Chris Kirkland had to spread himself wide to block Drogba's angled effort at the far post and at the other end Barthez's flayling foot blocked a shot from Steven Gerrard and dived to his right to halt a Baros drive.
