London:

Manchester United returned to the top of the English Premier League standings on Sunday following a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. The champions took the lead in the 15th minute through John O'Shea and doubled their advantage ten minutes later, when Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his 13th league goal of the season. Substitute Gus Poyet netted for Spurs in the 63rd minute, but his strike proved a mere consolation as the visitors held on for all three points. Defender Rio Ferdinand was named in the visitors' starting line-up, despite earning an eight month ban on Friday for failing to attend a drugs test in September. The Champions are back as the League leaders one point ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea after 17 matches. (With AP inputs)
