Manchester City beat United 4-1

London:

Manchester United all but handed its league title to Arsenal after a 4-1 loss at Manchester City and it was another defensive blunder that left the Reds 12 points behind the Gunners with 10 games to go. Trailing 2-1 with 18 minutes to go, United still had a chance to turn things round in the 130th derby but the first to be staged at the City of Manchester Stadium. But Mikael Silvestre, back on the United defense after injury, tried to control a through ball from City's Paul Bosvelt and, at the same time, pass to Wes Brown on the edge of his own area. He failed to do either and Trevor Sinclair, a self-confessed City fan, captured the loose ball and ran clear to prod it past Tim Howard for his team's third goal. Shaun Wright-Phillips, stepson of Arsenal great Ian Wright, added a fourth in injury time to complete the misery for United. While the City celebrated a rare success over its neighbour to ease its own relegation worries, the roar from north London was just as loud. After watching United win eight titles in 11 seasons, Arsenal is on the brink of its second in three. After being knocked out of the Champions League by FC Porto on Tuesday it was another hammer blow for United and manager Alex Ferguson. Now its only hope of success is the FA Cup and Ferguson's men have to get past Arsenal in the semifinal. (AP)
