London: Liverpool lost more ground in the English Premiership title race when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at their home ground, Anfield, on Saturday. Michael Owen opened the scoring for Liverpool after six minutes but Kevin Davies put the visitors on level terms just two minutes after the break and they nearly went on to take all three points. Liverpool were seeking revenge against Southampton after their 2-0 defeat ten days ago. And Liverpool tore into the visitors from the start with some early chances but it was the goal machine Owen who finally gave the Reds the lead in the sixth minute. Southampton who came into this match with five wins from eight league matches, got the Liverpool defence in a terrible tangle barely a minute into the second half. It is a game where you are punished if you are sloppy and Liverpool were. They had to settle for the 1-1 draw, which means they have taken just eight points from their last nine games. Leeds United vs Arsenal Leeds United must be glad they signed on Robbie Fowler from Liverpool, especially since he had such a great record against Arsenal. And the striker continued his goal scoring against the Gunners to give the hosts the lead after just six minutes. That result put the defending champions two points ahead of Newcastle United who were held to a goalless draw by Leicester City. Leeds find themselves in third place with Arsenal and Liverpool wrapping up the top five.
