Kevin Keegan's Manchester City romped to a 3-0 victory at Sunderland on Monday to climb up to 12th in the Premier League and leave Howard Wilkinson's men deeper in trouble in the relegation zone. Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe put City ahead a minute before half time, Chinese defender Sun Jihai added the second in the 62nd and Bermudan striker Shaun Goater added the third three minutes from the end. The result lifted City two places, while Sunderland remains next to last. The visitors almost took the lead in the 38th minute when Sunderland's Irish World Cup midfielder Kevin Kilbane headed Sun's free kick against his own post. But City went ahead a minute before half time when Sun's long ball put Foe in the clear and he lobbed the ball over the head of goalkeeper Juergen Macho. City repeatedly exposed Sunderland's badly organized offside trap when Nicolas Anelka and Sun constantly menaced the home defense with fast breaks down the center and the right wing. It was no surprise that Keegan's men went further ahead in the 62nd minute when Goater put Anelka through and, although Macho blocked his shot, Sun was left with an easy task of turning in the rebound. After Anelka had hit the bar from close range, Goater completed a miserable night for Sunderland when he turned inside the area and shot low past Macho for the third. (AP)
