Mumbai:Gearing up for this year's football season, Mumbai's Mahindra United has appointed a new coach, David Booth from England, to improve the team's final standing. The management has already signed on 12 new players and hopes to sign on some international players by the end of this month. Known for his technical expertise, in the recent past, Booth has coached national teams and despite many offers, he still chose to come to India and coach United. His reasons: he sees tremendous potential in the squad. "I have to look at their strengths and weaknesses and where they are weak. I have to help them and if they are good I have to make them better. So basically it is the coach who should adapt to the players," said Booth. On Booth's agenda is all-round improvement in some basic qualities like control, passing, movement, support and team formation as well as fitness and endurance levels of the players so that they are fit for the entire 90 minutes of the game, since most of the goals are often scored in the last 15 minutes. "I have been impressed by quite a few players. I have been impressed by their attitude, so I don't think there's any problem with their willingness for hard work. They have got good capability," said Booth. This is the first time Mahindra United has a foreign coach, not an unusual development. East Bengal too has a South African trainer, who was especially recommended by Adrian Le Roux, the former fitness trainer of the cricket team. Henry Menazes, Manager, Mahindra United, said, "We're on the run for professionalism. And we need to bring in some professional guys to really pick up the game from here because the goal plan says that India has to come up in the 2010 World Cup and that's what we are also working at." Despite many flashes of brilliance in the last few years, Mahindra United has still finished mid-table or below mid-table in the National Football League (NFL). The players and the management are hoping that the new coach gets the team to be more consistent this season.
