Madrid bids to bounce back against Juve

Madrid:

Hit by a heavy league defeat, Real Madrid needs to make a swift recovery for Tuesday's Champions Cup first-leg semifinal against Italian champion Juventus. Madrid's 5-1 debacle against Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Saturday means coach Vicente del Bosque will have to repair his players' confidence as they bid for a record 10th triumph in the competition. The Spanish league leader, which had gone 50 matches without losing at home, had led at halftime thanks to Ronaldo's 300th goal of his professional career. But Mallorca netted five times in the second half to inflict Madrid's heaviest home defeat since December 1999. Del Bosque tried to gloss over the loss on Monday, at least publicly. "We have great confidence in our play, because through the season we have shown our merits much more than our mistakes," Del Bosque said. "Besides, we have come through what would have been the ideal final against Manchester United and this gives us greater strength ahead of our semifinal against Juventus". Madrid midfield star Zinedine Zidane, who played on the losing team in the 1998 final when Madrid beat Juventus 1-0, said that the team should try to forget the defeat. "These things can occasionally happen and yesterday it happened to us," the Frenchman said on Sunday. "They're two different competitions and against Juventus we'll go out with the same idea as always, to play well and win". (AP)
