Lyon beat Nice 1-0 in season opener

Nice:

Defending Ligue-1 champions Olimpique Lyon won its first season-opening match in 23 years after a 1-0 result against Nice on Friday night. Striker Giovanni Elber scored the goal 13 minutes from full-time. Not since 1981 had Lyon won a season-opening match and with an away tie against a feisty Nice outfit, their chances of breaking that streak were not that good. Nice had the better of the early exchanges and the home team almost stole a lead in the 26th minute when Austrian striker Roland Linz's header almost evaded the reach of Lyon g'keeper Gregory Coupet. Twelve minutes later, Lyon attempted to counter - Florent Malouda's give-and-go with Elber almost yielded the desired result but for the efforts of Nice's Lilian Laslandes, who cleared the ball from danger after g'keeper Damien Grigorini was beaten. In the second half, both teams had a glut of half-chances - but the defending champions made full use of their first real opportunity when Giovanni Elber volleyed home a ball deflected from Nice defender Jose Cobos on 77 minutes. Nice did not give up - Romain Pitau came awfully close to scoring the equaliser from 18-metres in stoppage time. The final score was Lyon 1, Nice 0. Lyon are chasing their fourth straight French Premier League title - but had failed to win a season opener in 23 years. (AP)
