Libertad beat El Nacional

Paraguay's Libertad took the lead in Group 8 of Copa Libertadores on Thursday as they defeated El Nacional of Ecuador 4-1.

Paraguay's Libertad took the lead in Group 8 of Copa Libertadores on Thursday as they defeated El Nacional of Ecuador 4-1. The team has now moved closer to a berth in the second round of the South American club championship. Christian Riveros, Javier Villarreal and Hernan Rodrigo Lopez all scored within a 12-minute span midway through the second half, giving Libertad control and moving it past Argentina's River Plate midway through the group stage. Libertad improved to seven points from three games, one point ahead of River and five ahead of Brazil's Paulista. The loss left El Nacional with one point and in last place. The top two teams from each of the eight first-round groups advance to the second round. (AP)
