Rome: Returning to action from the champions' league, Italian club Lazio were even worse placed than Arsenal. They hosted PSV Eindhoven as they looked to open the account in the first round of the competition. The visitors with the best early chances and a good cross from the right in the 13th minute but PSV Eindhoven's Wilfred Bouma let it go a-begging. Lazio scored against the run of play in the 39th minute, Gaizka Mendieta with a long pass and Stefano Fiore with a great goal on his first touch. Fiore got a little aggressive with the Marshals who were trying to temper down his victory celebrations. Simone Inzaghi put on a little bit of an act to earn Lazio a penalty. Claudio Lopez would convert from the spot; the home side were 2-0 up in the 55th minute. A minute later, the Dutch team would pull one back. PSV's Yugoslav striker Mateja Kezman made full use of a big blunder by Lazio's new signing this season, Jaap Staam. Staam moved away instead of putting the opponent in an offside position. In injury time, Lazio had a few worries holding on to their 2-1 lead; a long through ball could have been trouble but Angelo Perruzi intercepted it perfectly to keep his team alive and kicking with its first win from four matches. And Staam was sure lucky to be on the winning side despite his goof up.
