Buenos Aires:

Velez manager Ricardo La Volpe said on Thursday he offered his resignation to club officials after the team was thrashed 5-0 by River Plate last weekend.

But that's behind him now - especially after the club beat league co-leader Estudiantes 1-0 on Wednesday to pull the club within a point of the top of the table.

"I had made up my mind to leave and had told the club leadership," La Volpe, the former Mexican national team manager said on Argentine radio station La Red in recalling events of last Sunday. In the end, his offer to resign wasn't accepted.

And Velez's fortunes improved with Wednesday's eighth-round victory, pulling it right behind front-runners Boca Juniors and Independiente.

Still, La Volpe told La Red that false local reports about his post-game locker room reaction to Sunday's loss to River Plate had stung him.

He said reports falsely suggested he insulted players after the River debacle. But he called those patent lies and thanked players for coming out and denying them publicly. "I respect criticism as long as it's constructive, but these were lies," he added.

Now with Velez in contention, he is looking forward to staying in the race for the title. Velez plays on Saturday against Racing Club in the ninth round of the Apertura championship.
