Kerala today drubbed Assam 5-2 in the quarterfinal league matches of the 57th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy.

Kerala drubbed Assam 5-2 while Karnataka held former champions Bengal to a goalless draw in the quarterfinal league matches of the 57th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy in Mumbai today.In Group-A, Kerala led 2-0 in the first half. Sylvester Ignatious and Ashif Shaeer scored two goals each and Abdul Hakkim netted the other for Kerala while Subir Goswami and Tiaakum Ao reduced the margin for Assam.Kerala took the lead in the very second minute, when Ignatious banged home after Hakkim's try rebounded off the goalpost. In the 20th minute, a Hakkim header off a pass from Abdul Naushad was bang on target. After the interval, Assam had a chance to score in the 47th minute when defender Lakhan Goyari's long range shot went over the bar. In the 50th minute, Kerala winger Shaeer made it 3-0 off a Hakim pass. Taking advantage of an apparent complacency on the part of Kerala, Assam made a countermove and their winger Duleshwar Rabha was brought down by Kerala's defender K Sameer inside the box. Goswami who took the penalty made no mistake.Assam's second goal was scored by Tiaakum Ao off a Kamakhya Basumatary pass. Kerala's substitue Ranjit Kunnimmel missed an easy chance to score off a Ignatious pass. In the 89th minute Ignatious made it 4-2 with a superb right footer and the very next minute Shaeer scored off substitute K Ajayan's pass. (PTI)
