Jubilant English fans celebrate win

London:

Ecstatic fans across England have been celebrating their country's important and historic win over football rivals Argentina in their World Cup match in Japan.Watching the match on giant screens set up in English soccer stadiums or over beers in the local pub on Friday, supporters roared in triumph when captain David Beckham scored from a penalty at the end of the first half. But they then had to watch anxiously through the second half as Argentina kept up relentless - but unsuccessful - waves of attack. Former England full-back George Cohen, who was part of the team that beat Argentina in 1966, praised the current team for their cool-headed defending. But in an Argentinian bar in West London the atmosphere was very different. Argentinian fans had to look away as they realised their side's run of 30 years undefeated against England was finally over. The result means England, who drew against Sweden 1-1 in its first group game last Sunday, is now in a good position to qualify for the second round. (AP)
