Kolkata:

Title holders East Bengal moved to the semifinal edging past a fighting Tollygunge Agragami 2-1, while Mohammedan Sporting made an exit after finishing goalless against Kolkata Port Trust in a violence-marred quarterfinal match of the 108th IFA Shield football tournament today. Trijit Das put East Bengal ahead in the 31st minute before Manas Das restored parity for Tollygunge in the 61st minute of the group A encounter at the East Bengal ground. East Bengal, who topped the group with six points, scored the winner through Suley Musah in the 70th minute, to set up a semi-final clash with Vasco Sports Club, who entered the pre summit round as the second team from group B. Crowd violence But violence marred the day as the Mohammedan-Kolkata Port Trust outing was stopped 40 seconds before time as crowds invaded the ground and beat up four Port players and a match official after referee SC Singh turned down Sporting's demand for a penalty, with the match still goalless. The IFA, which called a meeting of its tournament committee to decide the fate of the match, later announced that the result of the outing would stand valid as per the referee's report. "The referee's report says that he has concluded the game after blowing the final whistle. The match observer also endorsed the report. So the result stands," an IFA spokesman said, ruling out a replay as demanded by Sporting. Thus, Mohammedan Sporting, who had the same number of four points as Vasco, bowed out due to a poor goal difference. TFA, already into the last four, would play for a place in the final against Churchill Brothers. (PTI)
