Houston:
South Africa and Guatemala drew 1-1 in their Gold Cup Group C at the Reliant Stadium in Houston on Wednesday. Having lost 4-3 to Jamaica and 4-0 to Mexico in their previous two matches, Guatemala went ahead in the 37th minute. After breaking from their own half, Guatemala's Carlos Figueroa crossed from the corner. South Africa failed to clear and Carlos Ruiz's half-hot effort was turned in by Gonzalo Romero, who scored right in front of goal. Leading scorer Ruiz, who plays for Dallas of the MLS (Major Soccer League), finished tied as leading scorer of the first round with three goals in three games. Landon Donovan of the USA and Luis Tejada of Panama also scored three goals in the opening round of the matches. South Africa drew level in the 45th minute when a shot by Siyabanga Nomvete was only parried and Man of the Match Solace Nkosi followed up to collect the rebound and score from six metres. Neither team could find the net in the second half, but tempers erupted when Lungisani Ndlela and Pablo Melgar were involved in some pushing and shoving while contesting for a loose ball near the Guatemalan goal. Cooler heads then prevailed and the match continued without further incident as Bafana Bafana eliminated Guatemala with a 1-1 draw. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
